abstract = "Rates of Amazons primary forest conversion to alternative land
uses have increased from the 1970s, especially in the regions
southern and eastern portions. This paper spatially evaluates the
dynamics of anthropogenic disturbance of forest fragments in a
rural landholding in Southeast Par{\'a}, Brazil. Landsat TM
images covering a 26-year period (1985-2011) were used in the
analysis. While in 1985 forests prevailed in the landscape,
substantial losses were observed in the following year due to the
expansion of planted pastures and secondary succession. The almost
depletion of forests and the use of these areas for agriculture
was connected to a trend of stability in the area of Open Pasture.
This possibly resulted from the progressive adoption of
sustainable management practices. Deforestation rates showed two
different trends. Very high rates were initially recorded,
contrasting with a sharp decrease in the following period. A
progressive reduction then followed until the last period of
analysis, when a negative deforestation rate was recorded. The
landholdings amount of Legal Reserve (areas for environmental
protection, according to the Brazilian Forest Code) was lower than
the legally required standards. Considering the fragmentation of
remaining forests, it is therefore critical to provide effective
protection and avoid the degradation of these fragile areas.",
